Spending Time with your Children
If there is one thing that never gets old it is attending one of your child's events and seeing them catch your eye and smile. It's deeply satisfying to be there for our kids. When you can see in their eyes that they are glad you are there, it's even better.
Today I'm watching my youngest son at his first gymnastic meet of the season. He'll think it was a rough start but I think he's amazing. The dedication and strength of character as well as physical strength that the sport requires is inspiring to me. I've watched his team mates grow up over the years and the coach is dad to three current and one former team members. They've all been friends for years. It's so vital that our children's friends are good influences and enjoyable to be around.
This has been a good weekend because it held one of those other precious moments. I returned home after a long day away and was greeted by my three year old grandson running across the room exclaiming g-mom and throwing his little arms around me. His world is about to change because a little brother or sister is due to arrive in the spring. My daughter and son were babysitting for their sister while she went out to celebrate her birthday. Daniel calls our house the crazy house because with so many aunts and uncles devoted to his entertainment, it's pretty lively. Yep, his little world is about to change.
These are simple moments but ones that make having a family so much fun. I hope that you will take some time today to notice the smile on your child's face or to relish one of their achievements even if it's a young one with a successful potty training day. Hey, especially if it's that because that's a step toward your own freedom. I'm way past those days with my own kids but get to see my daughter tread those waters with her own children.
As the holidays approach, don't get so bogged down by the busyness to miss the special moments. Exercising Values is a great way to ensure that you are tuned in for at least a portion of the day. The accumulation of those
moments will have more impact than you know.
On the way to Arkansas today, my son and I had great conversations on sports, politics and on the mercies of God. We talked about how to be compassionate and how to forgive. Slow down for a bit and you may be surprised by the depth of the thoughts your children are having. Take some time for what's important and enjoy.
