Part of a Team
I just have a few minutes between the team meeting and the opening ceremonies here in Perth with the race about 40 hours away. The team leader remarked to the group that we are each in a unique position few athletes find themselves in because we are representing our country. He said we should look awful when we cross the finish line because we should have used up all of our strength. He said we can dive across but we must not crawl. He encouraged us to look after the rest of the team and urge each other on.
I thought all of his exhortations to us could also be given to families. We need to teach our children that what they do reflects on the family and we need to instill a sense of family pride. Working on common goals will forge strong bonds to help you do this. Each family member is an encouragement to the rest. Exercising Values provides the projects and goals that will help unite your family and create teamwork.
I can't remember the last time I was in a team uniform, college I suppose. This really is a wonderful experience. As we were getting our team photo taken it was nice to hear other athletes expressing some of the same concerns that had been rattling around my brain: will we be able to see the buoys, will wetsuits be legal tomorrow (doubtful), will we hold up in the heat, etc. It's calming just to know other people are also anxiously awaiting the start on Sunday.
I've read that the best performances come when you are relaxed and focused on enjoying the experience rather than stressing over performance. I think the comraderie of your team mates is what helps you to make this switch. So I'm off to the opening ceremonies, showcase of nations, and traditional pasta dinner. Let your kids know that you are glad they are part of your "team". Root for them and enjoy the ride.
