Fast-paced, full body, body weight training is the most effective way for both moms and kids to safely burn fat and develop a base of fitness. They are challenging, fun and intense enough to get results in a minimum of time, even as little as fifteen minutes a day. Intensity is relative and you can ease into a new program and still get results. Taking an easy does it, incremental approach to exercise can eventually get you ready for the most strenuous of workouts.
You need to start slow and easy and build three steps forward and one back to insure plenty of time to adapt. If you try to do too much too soon you risk injury, burnout, boredom, and life getting in the way. The skills learned by young children can be used to build confidence and increase their athletic potential. The calories burned will leave moms trim and fit. Descriptions of exercises you can do with your children can be found in the book Exercising Values.
Strength training using body weight is convenient and fun. It mimics daily activity and real life movement. It rebuilds metabolism boosting muscle tissue. It helps you burn more calories all day long even while you sleep. You started to lose a half pound of muscle a year while still in your mid twenties and this increases over time. Even if you weigh the same as you did in college your body composition may have radically changed for the worst. As muscle disappears so does bone strength. Adipose tissue, aka fat, is what will increase along with the risk for chronic diseases that rob vitality and end life.
Cardio alone will not give you optimal health or appearance. Adding strength training will benefit you in every way and can be done using body weight so you can do it anytime and anywhere without equipment. Whether you are a seasoned athlete that is now raising children or someone completely new to training that just wants to get back into a smaller size dress; you will be able to get results with fast-paced, full body resistance training.
Today, we may just want to influence our children to step away from the video games or television and become more active and fit. Later we want them to become happy, healthy adults. Parenting by example occurs whether or not we are aware of our influence and it never ends. When your child grows up and is the age you are now they will recall how you lived at that age and possibly choose to copy your example. It will never be as simple as teaching them what to do. You also need to model the lifestyle you are recommending. What we do influences other people’s choices. They like to see that we walk the talk. So have fun,be a little silly and create a memory they will learn from and cherish.
